Congratulations to Department of Mining Engineering seniors, Baylor Mattingly, Waylon Martin, Andrew Minckley and Tyler Stephens, who won third place in the 2025 David D. Eyer Senior Capstone Design Project Award competition.

This annual competition, sponsored by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, Pittsburgh Section and the Pittsburgh Coal Mining Institute of America, invites U.S. mineral engineering students to submit their capstone design project report that demonstrates their knowledge of engineering fundamentals, mining problem analysis, decision-making processes within constraints, and communication skills.  Individual or group projects are welcome, and there is prize money awarded.

David D. Eyer, P.E., founded the Student Senior Mine Design Project award in 1993, while on an ABET visit to a university with some outstanding senior capstone design projects. He was so impressed, he chose to use them as the model for judging all future reports. In 2024, to honor Eyer’s long-standing dedication to the competition, the Student Senior Mine Design Project Award was renamed the David D. Eyer Senior Capstone Design Project Award.
